Garlick and Winn give us two likely point scorers in next season's mountain time trial (if, hopefully, there will be one).  As for this season, the results speak for themselves.

Stage 2, Season 29
(http://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/etapas/almeria.jpg)
ST10 SP26 FL12 TQ7 DH6 HL22 AG10 TW7

Selection  (Name/Team/Age/Exp/GV)
Patrick Symon   PUCELABIKE   22      8      62.6
Jonathan Ronnald   MC   22      18  53.5
Andrew Truex   Averatalm   22      18      66.0

Vince Mount   MGSPD   22      7   59.7
Roy Fox   Clerville   21      4      58.4
Victor Gear   Oldmen   21      12   58.6

Everyone made the initial selection in the flats but when the hills arrived only the captain (Truex), the free rider (Steele), and a lone domestique (Sky-Bailey) did not fall by the wayside.  So in the lead group in the hilly 2nd section were three Americans, four Danes, an Italian, and a German.  There were more hills in section 3, and our big three were able to avoid the wayside and hang with the leaders, who now included two Brits and two Portuguese.  Interestingly, the eventual stage winner, the Swiss rider Krieg, was not in the lead group, which had swelled to 14.  He was, however, riding with two teammates just 15 seconds back.

In the penultimate section, the Brit Finley attacked on the descent and put a slight gap (5 seconds) on a trailing group of 11, which included USA's captain and free rider.  Sky-Bailey had done his work, and Truex, the American captain, gave him a thumbs-up as he jetted by on the downhill.

In a photo finish, Krieg won the dash to the line to take the stage.  Truex had a chance at the win but faded in the closing meters to finish 6th, a good showing nonetheless, according to the American team manager.  Steele finished a credible 13th, to score some points for Team USA.

For Team USA, a rider to remember is 21-year-old Seb Hamilton, who was the lone helper for captain Ronnald in the penultimate hills section.  His help was critical in boosting Ronnald to a sixth-place finish.   Hamilton, for his part, finished a credible 28th and was third among the 21s.

Team standings = USA moved up one spot to 8th with 410 points.  The top five are Belgium (890), Great Britain (830), Denmark (775), Holland (590) and Portugal  (550).

Randy Davis   BignigProCycling   21      2   71.4
Nathan Hudson   Monster   21      8   70.0

With a top-three comprised of a 21 and 20-year-old, this is a stage that I don't have high hopes for, but we'll see what we can do nonetheless.  Chuck Garlick, 21, who finished a close second in the U21 individual classification last season, will be the captain. He'll be supported by a bunch of young ones who look to be a force in the U23s next season.

Garlick scored, which was a happy surprise.  A majority of the domestiques went out faster than expected but Garlick always had at least one helper with him (except for section 3, the beyond-category climb).   The help received proved to be beneficial as Garlick finished a happy 15th, providing points for the team when none was expected.  I hesitate to say that he is the best 21-year-old climber in the game--my guess is that he's probably not--but next season's U23 mountain stages will provide evidence for or against.

Team standings = USA dropped two spots  to 10th with 480 points.  The top five are Denmark (1105), Holland (1020), Great Britain (940), Belgium (890) and Switzerland  (790).

Next up:  Sprint.

Congratulations!!! I'm happily surprised too,as I didn't expect much from the stage but Garlick along with your tactics proved me wrong hehe.I don't know if he is the best climber of his age,but he is for sure among the best.

Unfortunately the rest of this U23 season's stages don't suit him at all so as you said next season (hopefully with a mountain TT stage  ;D) will show us where he really is.

Garlick did very well in u21 last year, winning the mountain tt and I would have to check my records but I believe he finished 2nd overall in points.

Stage 5, Season 29
(http://www.cyclingforfun.org/cff/etapas/valladolid.jpg)
ST5 SP40 FL30  TQ5   AG10  TW10

Selection  (Name/Age/Team/GV/Role/Tactics)

Bryn Williams      22         Oldmen 74.9  Leader 21115
Nick Rowe      22         MercatoneZero  72.6 Free 22125
Ian Spiker   22         Oldmen  70.3 Dom 33333
Victor Gear      21         Oldmen 70.6 Dom 33333
Martin Aldrin      22         Alexandre  69.0 Dom 33333
Robert Blair      22         gicasoft  68.7 Dom 33333
Patrick Symon      22         PUCELABIKE  68.0 Dom 33333
Callum Blair      20         WVAchteruit  67.3 Dom 33333
Des Hamsten      22         tartaruga  68.8 Dom 33333

The tactics worked as planned with all nine making it together through the first four sections. I pondered adding a second free rider but didn't think anyone after Rowe could score so there was none.  Kinda wondering, though, if Spiker might have come through as a free if he had run 22125 like Rowe.  Alas, I will never know but it's nice to dream of what could have been.  Speaking of dreaming of what will be, a nice race was put in by 21-year-old Gear, who looks like he'll ascend to the Captain's seat next season.

Sweet (9th), Taylor (13th), Marbley (19th), and Kennedy (20th) scored in the flat (90km) TT for the U21s two seasons ago and I'll certainly be happy if they can replicate the feat, but we'll see because this event is shorter (38.9 km), with windy and cold conditions.

Team standings: USA moves up two spots  to 4th.  The top five are Holland (1490), Switzerland (1480), Denmark (1460), USA (1290) and Belgium (1270).

Mike Harris   RealAndres   19  3  57.7
William Wallace   TeaMetal   19 3  55.5

Alpin, who placed 7th in the U21s in this same race two seasons ago, will be the captain.  Truex, the most experienced guy in this bunch, will be a free rider.  All the rest will be helpers, with the goal of getting Alpin a top five placement.   We shall see how it goes.

The race didn't go well for us with not-so-great tactics being the main factor.   Alpin was certainly capable of a top 10, at least, so a 20th placement is a sad result.  But we'll take it and move on.

Team Standings:  Despite the disappointing result, we remain in 4th.  The top five are Switzerland (1720), Holland (1560) Denmark (1530), USA (1300) and Belgium (1270).

Wow Barry Holland!  :)

Yes, wow.

I recently sold him because my current training program would have stunted his growth.

Would be nice to have a U25 or U28 div so we can see these "middle age" guys going head to head because after they turn 23, they kind of disappear for a bunch of seasons to eventurally emerge as 28+ year olds.

If I'm not mistaken, this has been proposed but so far has been a no-go.  Correct?

I did find some remarks by TT super man Tony Martin who "sharply criticised the descent from the Alpe d'Huez as very dangerous. Sending the riders over that stretch is 'irresponsible,'" he said.   Martin went on to say that “the road is old, narrow, the surface bad, no barriers, if a rider makes a mistake he will face a free fall of 30 meters. To send us there is irresponsible."

That's very likely about the alternative descent from the Alpe d'Huez in the Tour of 2013, where after a climb of the Alpe the riders continued on a small road descending and then climbing to another mountain. That descending route was very different from the traditional climb and more of a goat path, which had been refurbished especially for the Tour.

I think this stage is created for CFF to have a combination of downhill and timetrial...

I am wondering if anyone knows if this TT was ever contested for real.  I did some looking and could not determine if it ever was raced. So I suppose by sending our riders there we're being irresponsible, so let's hope no one goes on a virtual free fall come race day.

Based on my initial GV calcs, the results did not turn out as I thought they would, with Robles Jr being the expected top finisher, given his high GV, high experience, and weather icon.  So when he came out not as the top finisher, I knew the GV formula was off and had to be tweaked, so I commenced a tweaking and came out with this:   ST9 TQ13 DH40 AG8 TT30.

I am not sure if aggression should play a part in a downhill TT but I added the AG element to the GV calc and doing so just might explain Peterson's 4th place finish because though he lacks experience and his TTing numbers aren't top drawer, his AG is quite high, as is his TQ.

Ohh Kekipi. Don't try get smarter with the time trial. Many users have gone that way.
But end up with a frontal lobotomy rather than a bottle in font of me!

It's so difficult to use results and make the GV.

Sta   12
Tec   18
Dow   40
TT   30

Sum   100

I have used this in season 26 with U21 riders. But I just accept the time trial. Never going to understand.

I am wondering if anyone knows if this TT was ever contested for real.  I did some looking and could not determine if it ever was raced.

I don't know about an Alpe d'Huez downhill time trial, but the 1987 Giro did have a downhill time trial, using the Poggio downhill from the end of Milan-San Remo.  Stephen Roche won the stage.  Despite winning the stage, Roche remarked: "Three riders have been killed this year, it seems like they are looking for a fourth?"

Thank you for the suggestion.  I will file it away in the memory bank while I still have memory to bank.   :D

Downhill TT's are a bad idea. Still i would watch one :D

Bob Kelly took it easy by the way. Said the organisors were nutjobs.

Edwards found himself 1:36 in arrears after the first three sections but he sat with teammates all the while, which would serve him well later.   In S4, he had a potential helper in Duffy but Duffy lost his legs and could not hold the pace, so Edwards had to move on sans help.  Meanwhile, Weiss made a surge in S4 and had enough in the tank (2EP) to finish as the last man in the top 20.

I had an initial notion to race Edwards 02244 or 02235 but I cowarded out from using no EP in the initial flat and raced him as noted above.  With the wind as it was, I did not want to risk him getting gapped from the get-go, which, if it happens, inevitably ends up in a game-over scenario.

As it went, Edwards got help thru section 4, most notably from Wallace, who ended up as the best-placed of the other Americans.   Perhaps Edwards would have placed higher if he had used 4EP in S4 rather than just three because that is what Oster from Holland seemed to have done hence 12243 for Edwards rather than 12234.

As for the free riders, Marbley and Teinert, the former was completely blown out of the water while the latter did credibly and looks to be a possible top-5 guy next season.

For this re-race of Stage 8 of the 2006 Tour of Switzeraland (won by Alberto Contador, btw) Edwards was the captain even though Weiss had the higher GV, the thought being that the latter was strong enough to make it on his own and into the points, and that almost came true.    Meanwhile, the chosen captain made it through the initial downhill section without an energy point expended and had help, as he was expected to.    Free-riding Weiss did not fare as well, being gapped by 28 seconds despite having decent downhill, technique, and aggression numbers.

Section 2 was a Hors catégorie climb to Lukmanier Pass.  I had everyone riding full gas here, except for Edwards, who used 4ep.  I was thinking that at least a few would make the lead group but, as it turned out, none did.   The best placed was Duffy who sat in a group of three dozen who were 10 seconds behind a small lead group of 5.   In the meantime, Edwards sat @ :23 with one helper.

Section 3 involved a descent from Lukmanier followed by a Cat 1 climb to Oberalp Pass. Here, a lead group fourteen formed, and included  Again, all except Edwards (who used 3) rode full gas, with the result being two, Weiss and Duffy, riding @ :14 behind the lead group of fourteen, which included the stage's eventual silver and bronze medalists.  It should be noted that the eventual stage winner, De Vries from Belgium, sat @ :14 here, with two teammates with him.   And where was the American captain?  He was @ :28 with two helpers and a lot of hope.

Section 4 saw the riders descend from Oberlap and then make another Cat 1 climb, this time to Gotthard Pass.  By this point, 5 of 9 Americans were out of gas, all their EPs having been spent.  Meanwhile, Edwards had 5ep to use and he did so and this saw him surge alone to 9th place @ :28.  Of note here is that the podium selection was made here, with the top four guys being the eventual top 4 for the stage.

Section 5 was a downhill, which in a mountain stage usually means that there are few if any changes in placement and this was born out this time as well.  Weiss just missed the top 20, riding 05520.  Not sure if 0543 would have been better for him or if that is the best he could have done.

Chapeau to PipiolosTeam for having all the podium guys and 5 of the top 10.   Hopefully, some up and coming Americans will find their way to that climbing factory or maybe [food for thought] I'll start a climbing factory of my own [/food for thought].  We shall see.   :D

Based on the above tactics, all nine were able to hang in the lead group for the first three sections; then in the fourth, the captain, the two frees and two helpers were all that were left in the 59-rider lead pack.   There was hope that Trautemberg just might score, but he didn't.  His 38 experience is certainly noteworthy, and it's the highest for any 22 year old that I can recall.  Is 40 the max experience a 22-year old can have?  Just wondering.

A third of the top 20 were 21 year olds, and we were fortunate to have the highest placed in Robles Jr.   He and Denmark's Jarl Andresen should be battling for the #1 spot in the flat TT next season.

His 38 experience is certainly noteworthy, and it's the highest for any 22 year old that I can recall.  Is 40 the max experience a 22-year old can have?  Just wondering.
41.6 or 42.2 experience (with race 118) for 44 races and zero national races.  Minimum 44 races is 26.4 experience.
Btw: My first pick cyclists will hit 40 experience during their 22nd year.

With the right staff you can go for 54 races without training loss.

My recent climbing graduate R. Kelly (20) (http://cff.cyclingforfun.netdna-cdn.com/cff/imagenes/montanabronce.jpg) for example already rode 47 races this season.

Urie was the captain and used 10425 but should have run something like 11523 to get into the top 20.   Kelly and Dardar ran free and used 21531.  I forgot to save the tactics for the helpers but I do recall running Trautemberg @ 55200. The others likely ran something like 43500.

Good to see my former cyclist Christian Edwards make one final hurrah in the u23 races (he won't make a leader in the senior international races - I recall that his talent was poor).

It would be interesting to see the tactics used by others in the top 10 because without them, I can only speculate on what happened.   It seems obvious to me that my captain could have been less aggressive in the hills and then the mountain and perhaps even in the flats that followed.  The good news is that he received help all the way which is a good thing, particularly since he was in the lead group in the first four sections.

Since this was the first time that this stage was ever staged, coming up with the GV numbers was a challenge.  I'd appreciate any feedback on the numbers I came up with.

We're #2 in the team standings which we'll enjoy for the moment because we appear to be weak in the hills which is what we'll be facing in stage 3.

I experienced some angst regarding the tactics for the captain, Teinert.  Initially, I had him at 23331.  I know that 21135 has worked in all-hills races like this one but only if the captain is one of the favorites.   Lacking conclusive comparative data, I did not know if Teinert was one of the favorites, so, to be safe, I determined that he was not but at worst he was a top-10er.   Given that conclusion, I went with 22332 which probably was the best for him.    Note that the tactics used for the free rider and the help are just guesstimates because I forgot to save the data.

Surprisingly, we are 1st in the team standings with mountains being next on the agenda.  I'll be pleased if we can hold on to the top spot but that probably will be a stretch given that our top mountain rider is a 21-year old.

As I mentioned in a previous post, when your top GV guy is a 21 year old, then that either means he is a phenom or that the team is weak and likely to be pummeled.  Having placed 5th in last season's U21 mountain stage, Kelly, the aforementioned 21er, is more likely good than phenomenal, so if we can get a top 10 20 from him, that would be cause for celebration.  We'll see how it goes.

Kelly should have won last years U21 race. Tactics he got werent good. He is phenominal ;) Not many 20yo's get a bronce medal on pure climbing. Great result with him though. Had hoped for such a result but did not expect it :)

So it turns out that Kelly is a phenom because any time a 21 can podium that is fantastic.   Looks like Gloria from Portugal went 03351 to finish 2nd.  It also appears that a handful used 1 or 2 for the final downhill.  I find that interesting.

Next up is sprint.  We'll see what we can do there.

Usually, 12 EPs are not used for the captain but in this case, given the cap's lack of GV strength, all 12 were employed and this still was not good enough to avoid being dropped in the 4th section.  On the bright side, our captain was 21 year old Darvin King who, hope upon hope, should be good enough to get some points next season.

Had a happy result with Ian Hill today when nothing was expected.  We'll take it and move on to next week's hill sprint.  Congrats are in order for Denmark, who mopped up in a dominating manner today.  In a word,  wow!

Used the drive-hard-then-hang-on tactic for our 21 year old captain and it led to a good result so we're happy.   Noted eight 21 year olds in the top 20 which is a few more than usual.  Also noted a blitzkrieg (again!) by Denmark, who, with one race left, certainly will win the U23 team title for the season.  Meanwhile, we'll try our best to finish in the top 5.

Yes, there is hope for a good coming season based on the performances of some of our 21s.

Ah yeah, forgot he was more of GC guy than a climber. He won the U21 title because of his cobble. He will be a nice one yeah. Very curious to see how our generation will end up. Leones is also doing a wonderful job.

And good start kekipi. Kelly won with a very large margin.

I went into the stage thinking that Kelly was the hands-down favorite and the only way he wouldn't win is if I blew it tactically.  Glad I didn't.

Victory #2 of the season for climbing phenom Kelly.  And with another mountain stage forthcoming (race # 4), he appears to be the top candidate for the individual title this season.

Very nice stage, did not expect that Kelly could win. Had hoped for a podium. Well ridden!
I went into the stage thinking that Kelly was the hands-down favorite and the only way he wouldn't win is if I blew it tactically.  Glad I didn't.

I am too ;) I have 3 or 4 riders I deem equally good for a stage like this as Kelly. His flat is still not very good so figured that's were the others would get something back on him. Guess flat counted for less :P

I don't doubt you.  In fact, while looking over your roster, I saw that you have no lack of 22 year old mountain men which, happily for me, include three Americans, the best of whom is the precocious Kelly.

Thanks for training and racing these guys.

I anticipate lots of good results for you in the future, both on the road and in the bank.

Ha, thanks. Very happy with my riders. There are some excellent ones between them. Kelly is a bit of my favourite though. While i usually buy most of my top riders i scouted him myself. He had brilliant stats and an excellent talent. He will be trained as an awesome climber first and then made to suit the Tour de France.

Not a happy day on the Starship Enterprise as captain Kirk failed to deliver them from the Klingons aka the Netherlands.  Next week, we'll have a captain who has already delivered twice so far and attempt to boldly go where no rider has gone before, AFAIK, that is by winning three U23 NT stages in a season.

Using 2ep for the first two sections for Kelly was a certainly a gamble but I thought he'd have lots of help and was more than strong enough to propel himself to a powerful finish for the final two sections.  Well, he did rally and surge but he was too far back to challenge for the win.   I'm bummed about the stage but am still hopeful that his 780 pts will be enough to garner him the individual title.

Cant always be fun ;) Shame it didn't work in this stage. Will be close at the end of the season. I think if the got a podium it would have been sealed but now it will be interesting to see. Zulle has a very good hill stat so he may be able to score big in stage 10.
