Race 5 - Clasica de Puente Genil

The 5th international stage brings us to the cobbled hills of Andalusia.
The local marketeers have launched a new PR campaign, trying to get a younger crowd excited about cycling. Oh, did I mention that all participants will receive a soft drink on arrival in the village Cordobilla?

----

Anyhow, you might have noticed that Australia is doing great so far this season. We truly have a great generation of cyclists. In the cobble/hill races, Earl Gatson (STR0NK3R) will try to get a good result and enlarge the gap with the other countries. Earl currently holds the #1 spot in the Cobble Dream Team, so he is one of the favourites going into this race.

Phil Lee (Ciripolen) and Bob Winger (WinterIsComing) will be the main helpers in this stage, while veteran riders like Ian Douglas,  Nate Huling will bring the much needed experience to the stage.

Goal: Top 3

I am afraid you are too late for registration for the Dia de la Bici... So, no refreshments for you... Or they still might have some left...

Guess I have to settle for a honey-flavored beer instead.  ;)

Great Earl Gatson!! Tonight's win is dedicated to boertjies (Dirk), who trained Gatson in his young years and helped him develop into the cyclist he is today. Boertjies' activity in general has been very important for Australia's results today.

Another shoutout to Phil Lee, who was with his team leader the whole race. He was doing really well today. :)

It's cycling, we can just claim the bees got their honey from some opium plants or something.

Race 6 - Hillsprint in Schweinfurt

We are halfway the calendar and we find ourselves in first place in the overall classification. So far, so good, but we have to keep focused and do our very best to get good results in the upcoming weeks. On sunday, we are heading for central Germany, where our cyclists will encounter a challenging hillsprint, starting in Witzenhausen and going all the way to Schweinfurt. Schweinfurt is probably best known as the city that was founded by the ancestors of the current Dutch NT manager (reekse). We expect a very strong performance from our Dutch rivals.  8)

When we take a look at our own squad, we have to say that we don't have a lot of quality hillsprinters. But, the ones we do have in stock, are rather good. Angel Friess is looking to build on his performance in the flat sprint, which he won. He will be helped by good old Tony Sandfort, Gary Fletcher and Austin Brubaker. The rest of the squad isn't regarded as strong enough to make a real impact in the final of this stage. Perhaps World Champion Kieran Donaldson can be of any help in the first sections due to his good flat- and brilliant hillstat. His relatively low sprint will most likely lower his GV too much though.

Goal: Top 5

Hmm, I would have though the ancestors of Reekse came from Swindon, but that might have been another branch of the family then...

Nice preview!  ;)

Race 6
Results Race 6: Hillsprint

1    Norvald Akselsen      30   0: 00"   300      Ciripolen
2    Lucien Moerman      32   0: 00"   250      Biciclistas
3    Virgilio Raposo      32   0: 00"   225      CyKings
4    Henrik Elstrup      29   0: 00"   200      STR0NK3R
5    Steven Chayton      32   0: 00"   180      Leones_Del_Sur
6    Angel Friess      31   0: 00"   160      Biciclistas
7    Heinz Sørensen      32   0: 00"   150      CanFatjp
8    Julien Ducoudrai      33   0: 00"   140      loshombresdelmazo
9    Krzysztof Hermann      32   0: 00"   130      SentinelChickens
10    Gilberto Riggi      32   0: 00"   120      drulo_team

Ahhh, too bad Angel Friess couldn't remain in the front group in the 4th section. Perhaps his hill stat was a bit on the low side for it. His helper Tony Sandfort was in the first group looking for him all the way. Still, without a helper, he is able to make a nice jump in the final section to finish 6th. Winner of the stage, Norvald Akselsen, takes the lead in the individual rankings with 525 points. I had good hopes that Angel Friess could be on top right now, but I guess it can't be christmas every day...  ;) ::)
I feel we still have a chance to win the individual title with Earl Gatson though. :)

Goal: top 5   Not achieved

In the Ranking by countries, we defend our first place, we even win a few points on USA, but Denmark, Norway and Belgium close in.

Next week, we have a flat-cobble race.
