Always fun (and surprising to me) when a very risky tactic works  :) ;
6th place for Mitchell. Very happy with this imo maximal result.
Two seasons ago in the exact same race at the U21 he finished 58 seconds behind the winner, this time just 14 seconds.
Very good to see that this Australian talent develops better then the competition.

Australia U23 not far behind the number 1 at the Ranking by countries, but the top 5 are very close to eachother :

1   1250
2   1120
3   1120   8)
4   930
5   895
6   740

STAGE 5 :  CHAMPS ÉLYSÉES

    7ºC

Paris, France.
This race has no secrets, everyone knows the final stage in the Tour de France.

It is difficult to prodict what the young Aussies can do in this race. Two seasons ago nobody scored points in almost the same U21 NT race.
There are some awsome hill-sprinters, but they are not suited for this flat sprint race and they have to try to help the teamcaptain. Hopefully the tactics will be ok (very difficult because of several reasons) and hopefully the teamcaptain can score some points.

Of course Karl Janson gets a free role, he is the number 1 in the International Ranking and every point counts.
His tactic for getting points in this race is very elementry/simple ; there has to be a massive crash in the peleton just before the finish, he has to cycle around it and only then he can score points.  :))

Australia U23 selection =

Kevin Smith (22) ihebproteam
Mike Foster (22) LuzGP
Hank Thomas (21) FrançaiseDesJeux
Lenny Battle (21) Shopitos_Cycling
Rick Thompson (22) VOXIV
Chester Martin (22) PaczynTeam
Karl Janson (22) Matterhorn
Duke Footman (21) arcadasteamone
Alex Levin (20) RaboRuben

Australians are cowboys on the road, so that massive crash just before the finish should be no problem... Being there at the right moment though...  :)

Yep  :)), already I have instructed some young Aussies to cycle the last few hundred meters in "kangaroo style", they will make very risky jumps from other countries lead out train to lead out train. That will do the job hopefully^^

11th place ; not entirely satisfied because I have a strong feeling the tactic of the teamcaptain had one energypoint too many.
On the bright side ; the teamcaptain finished in the first small group and 110 points for Australia.  :)

The Danish and the Dutch scored many many many points this sprint race, congratz to both countries.
Denmark now the new leader and The Netherlands takes the 3rd place, so Australia one place down.
The Ranking by Countries looks like this halfway the season, the top 5 are still very close :

1    1560
2    1430
3    1315
4    1230
5    1145

Next week a time trial. Previous season that was my first race as U23 NT manager, also race 6, I started halfway the season.
And back then we had no time trialists, so zero points.
This time Australia has a good TT-cyclist, he is in the u23 Dream Team, so points are expected.
But not too many points because no other U23 Aussie can score points in the upcoming TT-race.

STAGE 6 : Walter Hoffman

  5ºC

France.
A long distance time trial. Australia u23 has just one TT-cyclist who can score points and that is Walter Hoffman.
He is in the U23 Dream Team and should be the 2nd or 3rd best of his generation.
Two seasons ago he was 3rd at the U21 TT race, but this time trial is more then twice as long, so stamina will count way more then usual. That could or will be in disadvantage of Walter Hoffman, his stamina is not bad, but for sure not great. Hopefully he still can get a podium place despite of that.

All other cyclists are selected for experience. Also the current second best TT-cyclist of Australia U23, the just 21yo Larry Baldwin, is selected. He has a weather icon and great stamina, but I don t expect he can score points in this NT race. So he will ride for the experience as well.

Australia U23 selection =

Walter Hoffman (22) Team_Boogie_Woogie
Larry Baldwin (21) VILLESVENSKAS
William Owen (19) Argonautjes
Karl Janson (22) Matterhorn
Bruce Hooper (22) Rekutxu
Wilt Burton (21) PipiolosTeam
Baron Morrison (19) EufemianoFutentesTeam_EFT
Gary Oar (22) YaniHara
Rick Thompson (22) VOXIV

Yep ! Very good result, 2nd:)
You trained him well, Kazistuta, and let him race a lot ; my compliments.  8)

He made it exciting in section 4 with a flat tyre, but could hold his position, 2 seconds ahead of the number 3.
As expected the winner was Flevola (USA).
Also as expected the Danish scored lots of points, because this time trial was Team_Boogie_Woogie time !
Good that Danish team has a few foreigners, for example Hoffman (AUS).  ;)

In fact, the results are :
Top 10 --> only the number 6 was not a cyclist of that team. (9 out of 10 were, lol !!!!!!!!!)
Top 11-20 --> half of them were also Team_Boogie_Woogie cyclists, so 14 out of the top 20 in total !  8)

Ranking by countries after race 6 :

It will be very difficult (and perhaps impossible) to hold the 3rd place.

STAGE 7 : COBBLESTONES/HILLS

8ºC

Belgium.
Today a very difficult race. Australia U23 needs to score points to maintain the high position in the ranking by countries. There are 4 races to go this season and in one of them there will be probably zero points.
Luckely that doesnt count for this race, I expect points because 2 seasons ago the team captain was already 3rd in a different kind of cobblestones/hills U21 NT race.
I think that the Danish (1st, big lead) and the Dutch (now 4th) will do much better this season then the Aussies, so the target will be Spain (now 2nd, 130 points ahead of Australia) to end up on the podium as 3rd. I don t know if that is a real possibility, but a good goal for this season. The best result in the history of Australia U23 was just once a 3rd place, so to match that would be excellent.

Australia U23 selection =

Bruce Hooper (22) Rekutxu
Gary Oar (22) YaniHara
Alan Ray (22) BergamoProTeam
Ken Emerton (21) Bolaverde
Neil Harper (22) CERETOLO
Will Freeman (21) PaczynTeam
Nate Jackson (22) teambuttz
Eric Lungby (20) Kilometervreters
Karl Janson (22) Matterhorn
