USA U21 Rankings after draft 2

This is how the American young ones stack up right now.

There are 78 riders in the pool:

20-year-olds = 53
19-year-olds = 25   <---- improved but we still need more!

Stage 4, Season 30

ST6 SP44 FL22 TQ10 DH1 HL1 AG10 TW6

Selection  (Name/Team/Age/Exp/GV)
Paul Cassidy   cajabambacycling   20      0      66.6
Elvis Trautemberg   trekgvsu   20      21      64.6
Ted Overall   NaughtyDawgs   20      0   61.6
Sam Sorce   Teleast   20      4      61.1
Graham Lindskog   Shopitos_Cycling   20      2   60.4
Desmond Urie   FCSCycling   20      0      60.4
Gaynor Taylor   trekgvsu   20      10      59.8
Scott Finn   trekgvsu   19      4   57.7
Terrell Williams   Ek984   20      9      57.3

Cassidy had the help he needed and probably would have fared better, maybe a top 5, by running 10015.   Trautemberg, the free rider, likely would have scored if he had used one less EP in s4.

Stage 5, Season 30

ST15  FL23 TQ15 TT47

Selection  (Name/Team/Age/Exp/GV)
Darvin Jordan   ProBox   20      4      67.4
Tyler Lloyd   BrancosRacing   20      4      66.5
Paddy Robles-JR   FacHaBortoLo   19         0   65.9
Kirk Fevola   Bartali_ProCyclingTeam   19      0   63.5
Duke Malson   BigRingTheory   20      0      62.1
Vic Duffy   SonicCycling   20      8      58.7
Stewart Bauer   Lanihuli_cycling   20   6   57.4
Nate Wind   Saint_Raphael   19      0      55.9
Terrell Williams   Ek984   20      10      40.4

Williams, our top cobbler, is racing for experience.  Jordan and Lloyd look to be potential point scorers.  Two of the three 19 year olds are strong and just might surprise, perhaps as in S28 when we had five (5) in the top 20 for the long flat TT.   But we shall see.

100   Nate Wind      19   1: 30"   0      Saint_Raphael
135   Terrell Williams      20   2: 27"   0      Ek984

Jordan and Lloyd came through, as was hoped.  Also scoring was 19 year old Paddy Robles Jr, who looks to be a podium guy for next season's flat TT.  Denmark vaulted into 2nd place in the team standings after placing 7 (wow!) in the top 20.  Their lowest placed TTer was 28th which meant that all nine riders finished in the top 28.   Great showing by the Danes.

Team Standings After 5 Stages = 10th (590 pts).  Top 5 are Norway (1625), Denmark (1385), France (1170), Portugal (1030), and Spain (935).

Stage 7, Season 30

ST10  SP26  FL12  TQ7 DH6 HL22 AG10 TW7

For the first flat section, used 0 ep for the captain in this same race when I was NT manager and he was left in the dust, so I had reservations about using 0 for capt Overall in this go-around but I decided to take a chance.  Thankfully, it worked for him and he stood in the first group of 81 with the two free riders, Urie and Kelly, and two helpers, Cassidy and Edwards.    In the first hill section, Kelly and Edwards rode off with three others, including the eventual stage winner and runner-up, to form the lead group.   Meanwhile, Overall rode this section 7 secs. back with 44 others but with no help.  In the second hill section, Kelly had bystanders yelling "Mechanical doping!!" when he surged ahead as the solo leader.   Overall again rode this section sans help but he had a domestique, Edwards, ahead of him who was ordered to wait for his captain for the penultimate section.  This help proved beneficial and boosted Overall to a 7th place finish.   Kelly also finished in the points to end a productive day for the USA.

I had a feeling that Terrell could win the stage but wasn't 100% certain because I didn't know if a 71.6 GV was good enough for the victory.  Now I know.   Of course, there's the minor matter of the tactics :D, which I've screwed up a few times  to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

This time, things went better than I anticipated.  My hope was that Terrell would have help through the first three sections.  I anticipated that given the relative weakness of his mates, he might have none.  Fortunately, he did get help through the first three.

I also hoped that he'd use his GV strength to muscle his way home for the win.  I anticipated that he'd be outdone by the newest iteration of Boonen, Museeuw or Van Looy.   Just like white men can't jump, neither can Americans cobble.  Right?

But on this day, with the stars aligned just right, with just enough help, and with a weather bonus, one American did.

A happy day in the USA.

Team Standings After 8 Stages = 7th (1370 pts).  Top 5 are Norway (2225), France (1860), Italy (1785), Denmark (1725),  and Portugal (1570)

Not a typical a narrow or winding pavÚ section...

He must have had a father or mother working in Belgium in his youth. Great win and a new Tod Owens. Maybe?
Great win.

Did an unusual thing and had no free rider for this stage because I didn't think anyone except Christian had a chance to do anything but in hindsight it looks like the youngster Hunter might have if given the chance.

For Christian, he got help aplenty in the first two mountain sections and then the downhill and was alone, as expected, when the hills arrived at the end.  Am wondering if he might have placed a couple slots higher if he had used one more EP in S4, hence 32052.  Maybe, maybe not.

Stage 10, Season 30

ST15 FL12 CB19 TQ11 DH3 HL10 TT30

Selection  (Name/Team/Age/Exp/GV)

Darvin Jordan   ProBox   20      8  59.8
Paddy Robles-JR   FacHaBortoLo   19      6       58.9 (weather bonus)
William Wallace   marijntjesteam   20      10      57.4
Duke Malson   BigRingTheory   20      0  56.5
Terrell Feldner   Pampa   19      1      55.1
Maurice Cannon   Mamamia   19      1      54.5
Ken Bass   Reekse_Verkuhss   20      6   53.6 (weather bonus)
Kirk Fevola   Bartali_ProCyclingTeam   19      2   51.9
Terrell Williams   Ek984   20      16   49.8 (weather bonus)

Terrell Williams, our best cobbler and winner of stage 8, can't TT, but he was selected to bolster his experience, for future reference.  Whether Jordan, Robles Jr, and perhaps others can come through remains to be determined because no one is really training for a race of this sort.  Hence, we could possibly be shut out or perhaps pleasantly surprised.  Hopefully, it is the latter.

USA U21 Rankings @ start of season 31

This is how the American young ones stack up right now.

There are 42 riders in the pool (compared to 58 at the start of last season).

20-year-olds = 32 (compared to 51 last season)
19-year-olds = 10  (compared to 7 last season)

Stage 1, Season 31

ST10 FL15  TQ8 DH15 HL37 AG10 TW5

Selection  (Name/Team/Age/Exp/GV)
Fraser Teinert   TeaMetal   20      6      62.8
Pat Washington   berriozar   20      3   57.7
Justin Olssen   gromollet   20      2   56.3
Mike Hines   depunter   20      6      55.9
Jack Baxter   CTBF   20      1      55.3
Casey Crickton   Amaranteprocycling   20      0      52.5
Douglas Hunter   Ivanthor   20      2   52.5
Wilt Iverson   Melonazo   19      0   48.9
Liam Saucedo   tricycling   19      0   43.2

Tactics

Teinert, the easy choice for captain, only got help in the first section because the domestiques were not driven hard enough thereafter.  So he soloed the last four sections and still finished 7th.  This leads me to conclude that, with more help [hence, with better tactics], he could have podiumed.

Stage 2, Season 31

ST18 TQ10 DH15 HL47 AG7 TW3

Selection  (Name/Team/Age/Exp/GV)
Fraser Teinert   TeaMetal   20      6      63.9
Pat Washington   berriozar   20      3   57.9
Justin Olssen   gromollet   20      2   54.1

Kirk Weatherly   TeaMetal   19      0   54.7
Kenny Hunt   SentinelChickens   19      0   54.6

Tactics

Used some funky tactics for the free riders and domestiques and the hoped-for excellent result did not happen.  In fact, it did not even come close to happening.  Teinert getting a top-10 was the only bright spot but with better tactics he could have placed higher than he did.

Notes for future reference and analysis:
S1-- Washington @ :06; everyone else @ :15.
S2-- Teinert, Baxter, Washington @ :16; Hines, Hunter, Weatherly, Hunt @ :29.  Hudson, Lee-Curtis @ :39.
S3-- Teinert @ :07; Baxter @ :16, Washington @ :23,  Hines, Hunter, Weatherly, Hunt @:40, Hudson, Lee-Curtis @ :56
S4-- Teinert @ :07; Washington @ :27, Baxter @ :37,   Hines @ :46, Hunter @ :51, Weatherly, Hunt, Hudson, Lee-Curtis @ 1:09.

Stage 3, Season 31

ST20 CL46 TQ8 DH23 TW3

Selection  (Name/Team/Age/Exp/GV)

Casey Crickton   Amaranteprocycling   20      1      66.4
Bob Kelly   TeamRolf   19      0   65.8
Kendall Clark   FrierAccounting   20      1   65.0
Kirk Fevola   Bartali_ProCyclingTeam   20      6      64.7
Patrick Spiker   Lanihuli_cycling   20      4      63.5
Douglas Hunter   Ivanthor   20      5   62.7

Christian Goodman   OliverSG   20      0   61.8
Benjamin Lee-Curtis   SentinelChickens   20      5   61.7

Tactics

Not a happy nor expected result.  Given the energy outputs shown above, my thinking\hope was that all nine would make the lead group on the initial downhill but, sadly, only three did.

In S2, the climb of Col de la Madeleine, the expectation was that there'd be a selection, and there was, but we were not among those who made it, with the best placed being two helpers, Hunter and Smith @ :26.   Meanwhile, Crickton the captain, along with a helper, was in a group of 21 @ :40.  That Crickton had a helper in S2 was a good thing because I expected he'd have none.

As for the descent in S3, the expectation\hope was that Crickton would make the lead group and also pick up some helpers. He in fact did pick up some helpers (4 of 'em) but he did not make the lead group.  He also lost time, in this case 7 seconds.  Meanwhile, the lead group swelled to 23, with the best placed Americans (Hunter, Smith, Goodman) sitting in group 2 @ :24.

On the climbs to Col du Telegraphe and then the Galibier in S4, the expectation/hope was that Crickton would be among the leaders or at least close to them, in the best case with a helper with him.  The reality was this: he was not in the lead bunch nor even close, cresting out the Galibier 1:04  behind the eventual podium placers and with no help to boot.

On the final downhill to the finish,  Crickton still lost time, even with 2ep spent.    Not a happy day for the USA.   :-[ :-[ :-[

Wow, Kelly is a nice one already. I'm very happy with him. He's well talented and will be able to compete for the Yellow in a few seasons :D The other Americans in my team will go a long way as well. Talented bunch of cyclist :)
